My Top Picks for the Best Vegan Protein Powder Products

Since having started this blog back in 2016, in the back of my mind I’ve been thinking about what would be considered the “best-tasting vegan protein powder.” I have narrowed it down to six incredible products that I believe taste the best
Of course, the flavor of protein powder is a subjective opinion that largely depends on one’s taste and preferences. For instance, some people can’t stand stevia leaf as a sweetening agent, while others don’t mind it at all.
But having tried my fair share of vegan protein powders (upwards of thirty different products) I am confident there are at least one or two options in this list that even the pickiest of consumers will enjoy.
1. Orgain Simple Protein
One of the newest products from a quality, all-organic brand, Orgain Simple Protein is sweetened with coconut sugar, so it has a very natural and balanced taste with pleasant nutty and biscuity undertones.
It’s very creamy and smooth, so it works well in just about everything from oatmeal and smoothies to pancakes and baked goods.
Orgain Simple Protein is available in Creamy Vanilla, Creamy Chocolate, and Peanut Butter. Each flavor is a stevia-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and of course, dairy-free protein powder. The minimal use of natural ingredients makes this a truly clean protein powder that doesn’t contain anything artificial or unnecessary.

2. OWYN Plant Protein Powder
OWYN (Only What You Need) is an unpopular yet top-shelf brand that makes ultra-healthy plant proteins that taste good. Like Orgain Simple’s vanilla, OWYN Plant Protein’s vanilla flavor has a nice maltiness that’s creamy smooth, and perfectly sweet.
In addition to 4 grams of cane sugar per serving, OWNY Plan Protein is also sweetened with monk fruit. So it’s an interesting stevia-free option that works.
Uniquely positioned as an allergy-friendly protein powder, OWYN Plant Protein is a clean and diverse plant protein that’s equipped with probiotics and superfoods greens blend for added nourishment and immunity. Grain-free and allergen-free, OWYN Plant Protein packs pea, pumpkin seed, and chia protein, offering a strong stack of recovery-enhancing amino acids.

3. Garden of Life Sport Protein
This is probably my most frequently purchased plant protein powder. Garden of Life Sport is an athletically-minded sport protein powder that’s dense in BCAAs and has additional recovery-enhancing ingredients. It just so happens to have the perfect, not-too-sweet balance that I am looking for.
Some might argue that this protein powder is not sweet enough, but I prefer it. Garden of Life Sport has a very mild level of sweetness that is rounded out with an extremely smooth creaminess that works in everything.
It has a certain transparency to it, allowing you actually taste the fresh ingredients in your smoothie. I am a sucker for the vanilla flavor protein powders (especially from Garden of Life evidently), but the chocolate is also fantastic if you go there. Overall, I find this to be one of the best vegan protein powders out there.

4. Vega Sport Protein
Vega Sport Protein is another frequently purchased protein powder for me, both for its taste and its recovery-enhancing properties for optimizing athletic performance.
If you’re sensitive to stevia, then this is probably not for you, as it’s slightly more stevia-forward. But if you’re keen on low-sugar, tastefully balanced stevia as the sweetener, then you’ll probably like it.
If you like peanut butter-flavored protein powders, then Vega Sport Protein is a solid choice. It’s low-key earthy and nutty that’s fairly sweet and delectably creamy. It’s one of the best-tasting vegan protein powder blends to be included in oatmeal, smoothies, or simply mixed with almond milk for a quick pudding.
Like its Garden of Life counterpart mentioned above, Vega Sport Protein is a nutritionally-stacked protein powder with recovery-minded ingredients like turmeric, tart cherry, and bromelain. It’s also soy-free, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly.

5. Garden of Life RAW Organic
This flagship protein powder from Garden of Life has been around for a long time, and for good reason. It’s a reliable, OG option that’s mildly sweet and offers a variety of flavors.
Get it in Chocolate, Unflavored, Vanilla, and Vanilla Chai (the latter two being my favorites and “unflavored” offering a stevia-free option.)
Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein is a great decision for all walks of life. It’s completely raw, so it’s made from sprouted protein and ingredients, and it contains gut-friendly probiotics and digestive enzymes. Despite being ridiculously healthy, I find it to be one of the best-tasting vegan protein powders on the shelves.

6. GHOST Vegan Protein Powder
One of the newest and best-tasting vegan protein powder options is from GHOST. This brand makes both whey and plant-based protein powders that come in a variety of unconventional flavors. They include:
- Pancake Batter
- Banana Pancake Batter
- Chocolate Cereal Milk
- Peanut Butter Cereal Milk
My favorite is Pancake Batter. It’s not overly sweet, it’s stevia-free, and it’s a smooth-tasting alternative to vanilla.
The protein itself derives from pea, pumpkin seed, and watermelon seed sources, and each tub packs 28 single-scoop servings of 20 grams of protein. GHOST Vegan Protein is also a keto-friendly protein powder option, as most flavors have zero sugar and low carbohydrates.
My Choice for the Best-Tasting Protein Powder
If had to choose just one of the above, I would choose Orgain Simple Protein. While I can tolerate stevia, I prefer a protein powder that includes real sugar and has a natural flavor profile. Compared to other former protein powders from Orgain, it’s a giant improvement.
Orgain Simple Protein checks all the boxes in the taste department. It’s a malty, smooth-tasting protein powder that offers a nice complement and not an over-dominating presence. It also comes in three of my favorite flavors, particularly Vanilla and Peanut Butter. So for me, I can’t go wrong.
