Let’s be real. A lot of protein powders are way too sweet and liberally flavored, overdominating whatever we add them to.

It’s no wonder why unflavored protein powder has become a popular choice. These options often provide a clean and transparent flavor profile and a simplified ingredients list.

With unflavored protein powder, you can actually taste the fruit in your smoothie. Or maybe you don’t want a dopamine release in your brain from tasting something sweet (which is common with most vegan protein powders), which only increases cravings.

Whatever your motives, there’s certainly a place for protein powders without vanilla, chocolate, or other flavoring agents.

Below I highlight some of the best unflavored protein powders I’ve tried (based on over thirty different products I’ve reviewed).

7 Best Unflavored Protein Powder Products

Best Unflavored Protein Powder

One of the common denominators with unflavored protein powder is that they don’t contain stevia or artificial sweeteners.

These agents tend to over-power protein powder and many people avoid them like the plague (see my post on stevia-free protein powder).

For the best unflavored protein powders that top the podium in terms of taste and nutrition, give these products a try.

1. PlantFusion Complete Protein Natural

PlantFusion Complete Protein Powder Unflavored Natural No-Stevia

PlantFusion Complete Protein Natural is a no-stevia option that’s made from pea, artichoke, organic sprouted amaranth, organic sprouted quinoa, and whole algae protein.

This blend, which offers 21 grams of protein per serving, delivers a rich amino acid profile that’s sufficient for building and repairing muscle.

With its fermented grains and proprietary enzyme blend, PlantFusion Complete Protein is made for easy digestion. While it doesn’t contain stevia, it does have monk fruit extract which gives it a very subtle sweetness.

This helps make the protein powder smooth and palatable, while still providing the clean transparency that’s desired in an unflavored protein powder.

2. Orgain Organic Unflavored Vegan Protein Powder

Orgain Organic Unsweetened Unflavored Vegan Protein Powder

Orgain Organic Unflavored Vegan Protein Powder is a simple yet effective protein blend derived from pea, brown rice, and chia seeds. This one that I regularly purchase, mainly because it’s organic, affordable, and available at my local grocery store.

Orgain Organic has low net carbs, and contains no added sugar, and has a complete amino acid profile. It also provides just shy of 4 grams of BCAAs for the athletes wondering.

100% organic, non-GMO, carrageenan-free, and artificial ingredient/sweetener-free, Orgain Organic Unflavored Vegan Protein Powder is a suitable choice for various dietary preferences, including vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free.

It has a reputation for being very smooth and clean tasting, not bland or chalky like some unflavored protein powder. It works well with different recipes without any overpowering taste.

3. Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder Unflavored

Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein Powder Unflavored

Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein is arguably one of the healthiest proteins given the raw, organic state of the ingredients and sheer abundance of plants. In turn, it provides magnesium, zinc, selenium, and manganese, as well as vitamins A, E, D, and K.

The extensive protein blend includes pea, sprouted brown rice, amaranth, buckwheat, millet, cracked wall chlorella, quinoa, chia seed, garbanzo bean, lentil, adzuki bean, flax seed, sunflower seed, pumpkin seed, sesame seed. All of which is organic and most of which is sprouted.

Offering 22 grams of protein per single scoop serving, Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein has about 4 grams of BCAAs, which is sufficient for most recovery-minded individuals. Relatively low carb and zero sugar, it’s also keto-friendly protein powder

The product is a top-tier option in the category of unflavored vegan protein powders. It’s very transparent and natural-tasting in that it has little to no flavor.

4. Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Natural

Sunwarrior Warrior Blend Natural Unflavored Protein Powder

Sunwarrior Warrior Blend is a top choice, particularly for those seeking a no-sugar, low-carb/ketogenic option. It’s a non-GMO, organic, and raw vegan protein that’s free from soy, gluten, dairy, and artificial ingredients. This blend primarily features organic pea, cranberry, and hemp seed proteins.

A single scoop delivers 19 grams of protein and about 5.8 grams of BCAAs, making it suitable for athletes and those focused on muscle building. The inclusion of ancient sea salt, ground coconut, and MCTs adds value, especially for athletes.

The powder is available in flavors like Natural (stevia-free), Vanilla, Chocolate, Mocha, and Berry. The Natural flavor is nearly tasteless, blending well with a wide range of uses.

5. Garden of Life RAW Fit Original

Garden of Life RAW Fit High Protein Powder Unflavored Original

Garden of Life RAW Fit Protein stands out with its ‘Raw Certified Organic Sprouted Protein Blend,’ offering an impressive 26 grams of protein per serving, sourced from seventeen different plant foods. It’s particularly notable for its diverse range of amino-rich, sprouted proteins, including pea, brown rice, chia, flaxseed, and more.

Apart from its robust protein blend, it includes a ‘Raw Certified Organic Weight Loss & Stress Management Blend,’ featuring Svetol® (green coffee bean extract) and ashwagandha, which aid in metabolism stimulation and hunger management.

Garden of Life RAW Fit is high in BCAAs with over 5 grams per serving, aligning it with other high-performance sports proteins. It’s rich in essential vitamins like A, D, E, K, and minerals such as magnesium, positioning it as a comprehensive choice for muscle building and weight loss.

The original flavor of Garden of Life RAW Fit is considered the unflavored option of this protein powder, but it’s not 100% unflavored. The taste has very subtle hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and light cinnamon, which reminds me of eggnog for some reason. It’s quite pleasant and barely noticeable but be warned that it’s not a truly unflavored protein powder.

7. NOOSH Plant-Based Almond Protein Powder Unflavored

NOOSH Almond Protein Powder Unflavored

This unflavored protein powder from NOOSH is the simplest option in this line-up made only from California-grown almonds. It is well-reviewed for its clean, neutral taste, and it’s also one of the more affordable options.

Because it’s only made from almond, it’s free from just about everything, including preservatives and artificial flavors. However, it is not a complete protein and only has about 2.5 grams of BCAAs, which may be insufficient for athletic recovery.

NOOSH is a fantastic, women-owned brand that makes a lot of different products in the wellness space. If you love almonds and need a protein boost for pancakes, smoothies, and other creative additions, this is one unflavored vegan protein powder worth trying.
