My Review of Truvani Protein Powder

A row of four flavors of Truvani Plant-based protein powder

As a certified organic, vegan, and non-GMO brand, Truvani has carved a niche in clean protein powder products that come in a variety of flavors.

Truvani is a boutique brand that’s a bit more on the pricey side. But unlike most mainstream protein powders, Truvani doesn’t use any thickeners, gums, or fillers that commonly cause bloating, constipation, and gas in some people.

Most flavors of Truvani protein powder contain only 5 or 6 recognizable ingredients (some more or less.) There are no added sugars, artificial sweeteners, ‘natural’ flavors, or any questionable ingredients whatsoever.

As part of my Truvani protein powder review, I started with three of my usual favorites–Vanilla, Chocolate, and Peanut Butter. It also comes in an unsweetened and unflavored protein powder option with only 3 ingredients!

So, while Truvani appears clean and pure on the surface, does it actually taste good? And is Truvani good for you? Get the full scoop on Truvani protein powder in my review below.

Ingredients: Is Truvani Protein Powder Good for You?

Truvani Unflavored & Unsweetened Protein Powder

The exact ingredients used in Truvani protein powder vary depending on the flavor. For instance, Vanilla Chai has the most ingredients (11 total) as it contains ginger root, cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, nutmeg, and clove for its chai taste.

Vanilla, on the other hand, has just 5 ingredients, with vanilla powder being the only unique flavoring agent next to Truvani’s base ingredients. This includes:

  • Organic pea protein concentrate: This is the primary plant-based protein source across all of Truvani’s protein powders. Pea is a complete protein with an abundance of amino acids, especially Leucine, Lysine, Valine, and Isoleucine. (three of which are branched-chain amino acids that help with muscle recovery.)
  • Organic pumpkin seed concentrate: Another nutritionally dense source of protein that complements the amino acid profile of pea, pumpkin seed is rich in Arginine, Phenylalanine, and Tryptophan. The concentrated nature of these proteins means they’ve undergone less processing as is the case with isolates.
  • Organic chia seed protein concentrate: Although it’s one of the last ingredients in Truvani protein powder, chia seed protein helps diversify the product’s amino acid profile, adding more Phenylalanine and Methionine into the mix.
  • Organic monk fruit extract: Except for the ‘unflavored/unsweetened’ option in Truvani’s protein powder line-up, each product contains monk fruit extract–a natural zero-calorie sweetener that’s generally preferred over stevia leaf, sugar alcohols, and artificial sweeteners.

Macronutrient Profile of Truvani Protein Powder

In terms of calories, most flavors of Truvani have 130 calories per single-scoop serving. There are a couple of exceptions, as the unflavored option has only 100 calories, while the chocolate peanut butter flavor has 150 calories. Shown below is the Peanut Butter flavor’s nutritional facts.

Truvani protein powder nutritional facts

Each Truvani protein powder flavor delivers 20g to 21g of vegan protein powder serving and around 2g to 3g of fat.

Again, this depends on the flavor–especially in terms of carbohydrates and sugar–as some flavors have <1g of carb and zero sugar (unflavored), and others have closer to 7g of carbs and 3g of sugar (banana cinnamon).

The beauty in this range of macronutrients means there’s something for every type of diet. The zero-sugar protein powder option from Truvani is a suitable choice if your keto. And all flavors are entirely vegan and low-FODMAP.

What About Truvani Protein Powder’s Lead Exposure Warning?

Truvani protein powder has a Prop65 warning for lead/heavy metals warning

But what about the California Prop 65 warning on the label that states “Consuming this product can expose you to lead?” While understandably alarming, this is a requirement for any product sold in California that may have traces of lead and heavy metals, no matter how small.

The fact of the matter is, that Truvani’s protein powder products are third-party tested for lead and other heavy metals, and they contain some of the smallest amounts (even less than most vegetables that absorb lead from soil).

The reason this warning seems so alarming is that most other protein powder products do not conduct proper testing and avoid putting any sort of mention of lead contents in their products. In reality, these products are likely to contain the highest amount of heavy metal contaminants.

According to Truvani’s third-party test results (shown below), a serving of its protein powder contains 0.319 micrograms of lead. Compare that to the average avocado which has 0.9 mcg/s or strawberries which have 2.205 mcg/s (or nearly 6x the amount of lead compared to Truvani).

The bottom line: Despite this label warning, Truvani is a brand in the protein powder space that you should be least concerned about when it comes to lead exposure.

All things considered, Truvani is one of the healthiest and cleanest protein powder options on the market.

Given its real food ingredients and lack of fillers, gums, and synthetic additives, its purity speaks volumes as one of the best protein powders that’s good for you and delicious tasting.

Flavors: Does Truvani Protein Powder Taste Good?

These three Truvani protein powder flavors were in my taste review

As mentioned above, the three protein powder flavors that I reviewed from Truvani were Vanilla, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate.

Truvani also makes a variety of other options–like Banana Cinnamon, Vanilla Chia, Matcha, Pumpkin Spice, and Chocolate Peanut Butter–so there’s a lot left to review. But from the three flavors I tried, I can provide an assessment of whether or not Truvani protein powder tastes good.

Overall Thoughts on Truvani’s Taste

I’ve read a lot of other reviews on Truvani protein powder and most of them are positive and well-regarded for its taste. I felt a bit neutral about the taste of the three flavors that I tried. Each was mildly sweet and had a pleasant flavor, but also had drawbacks.

The use of monk fruit extract provides a clean and balanced level of sweetness that’s subtle and not overpowering. But I found the Vanilla and Peanut Butter flavor to taste somewhat muted without a lot of flavor other than the monk fruit.

So when I see claims on Truvani’s website like “Protein That Tastes Like Ice Cream” or “Protein That Tastes Like a Peanut Butter Cookie,” I disagree. It’s not that I dislike the taste of Truvani, I just found the flavor profiles to be quite mellow.

The biggest drawback in terms of palatability was Truvani’s texture. It had a bit of silty, chalkiness to it. This is a minor flaw, though, especially given that the protein powder doesn’t have any gums or additives to preserve its texture and mixability.

Below I provide a short taste test review of the three flavors that I tried.

Truvani Peanut Butter Protein Powder

Truvani Peanut Butter Protein Powder

Despite organic peanut flour being the second ingredient, the actual peanut butter flavor doesn’t pack much of a punch. It’s moderately sweet and creamy, but there isn’t a whole lot of peanut buttery taste to it.

Compared to some of my favorite peanut butter protein powders, Truvani’s version is quite soft and subtle, lacking that nuttiness that I crave. This might not be a bad thing for a smoothie (bring in the real peanut butter!) or baked goods where you want to flavor to be more transparent than overdominant.

Truvani Vanilla Protein Powder

The vanilla flavor option has a pleasant, mildly sweet vanilla bean flavor to it. I wouldn’t compare it to ice cream, but it certainly offers a clean taste that would go well with a variety of uses.

Like the peanut butter option, Truvani Vanilla is more muted, subtle, and transparent compared to other vanilla protein powders that can oftentimes be very sweet and overpowering.

Truvani Chocolate Protein Powder

Truvani Chocolate Protein Powder

Truvani’s Chocolate protein powder was my favorite flavor of the three. The use of organic alkalized cocoa and organic vanilla powder provides a pronounced flavor profile that’s rich, bold, and decadent.

Sometimes I like to make a ‘protein powder pudding’ with just almond milk and the right amount of protein powder. Chocolate is the only flavor from Truvani that I would make this pudding with, as it packs the most flavor and the texture is more palatable and smooth compared to the others.

Cost: Is Truvani Protein Powder Worth The Price?

Scooping from a large pile of Chocolate Truvani Protein Powder

Truvani is priced higher compared to most protein powder, typically at the mid-$40 price point for a 21 oz/1.3lb package. I paid $44.99 for this size unit on Amazon (February 2024). I get it, protein powder can be expensive.

Being an entirely organic, third-party tested protein powder that’s one of the cleanest of its kind, this price point is quite fair when you compare Truvani to other high-quality protein powders that cost upwards of $50 to $60+ per unit.

With 20 servings per package, I’d argue Truvani is well worth the price based on the pure quality of protein powder that you’re getting. Sure, other protein powders cost below $40 per package, but these are incomparable in terms of purity and amount of servings per unit.

Bottom Line

Truvani protein powder is highly sought after for its minimal amount of ingredients used and its lack of additives commonly found in other protein powders, like gums, emulsifiers, sugar alcohols, and artificial sweeteners.

I am a big fan of Truvani’s transparency and commitment to offering a clean protein powder product that truly stands out for its honest purity. It’s an accountable brand that accommodates anyone looking for a completely organic, plant-based, soy-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, non-dairy protein powder.

While it comes in a wide variety of flavors, the taste of Truvani protein powder is not my favorite. These flaws in flavor and texture are very minor in the grand scheme of things. I am one to tolerate a mediocre-tasting protein powder if it means avoiding gums and artificial ingredients.

However, I think Truvani would be the perfect option when mixing protein powder with less conventional foods, like baked goods, sauces, dressings, and other things where you don’t want vegan protein powder overpowering the taste.

Had my first Truvani. I used the Vanilla added coconut milk, 1/2 frozen banana and some ice cubes. It was as good as ice cream for me! I typically buy unsweetened protein powders, they’re too sweet for me, hate the taste of Stevia. I sweetened with fruit but this Truvani could be the next addition to my healthy kitchen. I will pay more for quality control with fewer ingredients.
